Biography of Gopal Krishna Gokhale
May 9, 1866 – 1915
Gopal Krishna Gokhale, the political guru of Gandhiji, was born on May 9, 1866 at Katulk in Ratnagiri (Maharashtra). Belonging to an economically weak family, he completed his graduation with a lot of difficulties.After completing his education, he joined the Deccan Education Society, Poona. In 1885, he was invited to Fergusson College to deliver a lecture there. Gokhale was extremely influenced by Ranade, his political guru. Gokhale became a member of the Indian National Congress in 1889.
In 1905, he founded the ‘Servants of India Society’ and ‘Ranade Institute of Economies’ in 1908.
Gopal Krishna Gokhale was a great social reformer. He completely rejected the caste system and the untouchability prevailing in the Indian society. He opined the necessity of mass education to enhance national political consciousness among people. He blamed exploitative British policy ,for the frightful poverty of Indians. He visited England several times to make the British government aware of the plight of Indians. He died in 1915.
